Dear conveners,
as mentioned in ap-, it- and ops- calls, we plan to prepare the case for a
further extension of HESS into 2025. This case is not meant to be an
enormous amount of work to generate a heavy document. It is rather an
opportunity for all members of the collaboration to propose changes to our
strategy for running HESS, such as, e.g., new science approaches, new
procedures and ways of calibrating data to get better results. We aim for
making improvements based on our experience and shape the observing
program such that we will cover the most attractive science questions.
I would like to encourage you once more to entertain discussions in
forthcoming meetings of your working groups.
We would like to arrange a <1h meeting among all conveners in the next week
to discuss any suggestions that you might want to put forward and how to
best collect further input.
As a second topic we want to discuss the options for a collaboration
meeting in the next few months.
Please indicate your availability on this poll:
https://terminplaner4.dfn.de/f4B26Z9tXJW7hkW5
In a separate mail I request input from the HESS group leaders concerning a
collaboration meeting in the next few months.
Best regards,
Stefan,
for the hess-ec
Dear AP conveners, dear OC colleagues,
as we have agreed, we will have an exchange of information between AP
conveners and OC members after proposal submission and before evaluation
by the OC. Besides E-Mails (or a secured confluence page), a common
telecon between the two groups will be organized.
To optimize attendance, Anita and I would like to freeze the date for
the telecon (that can only happen in the week of January 11-15, 2021)
already in the next days. A doodle for the possible dates is here:
https://doodle.com/poll/st5cvyuigqdu3yf7
It would be great if you (AP conveners and OC members) could fill this
in latest by beginnning of next week, i.e. until Monday, October 26,
12am (noon).
Best, Gerd

Dear Colleagues,
one of the items to discuss at our upcoming meeting on Friday is
the OC procedures for proposal evaluation & link to AP. I heard from
many sides from within AP and OC that last proposal round's proposal
review procedures were not optimal, there is significant room for
improvements. The OC, in several telecons, has therefore prepared a
couple of suggestions, that we shall discuss in the upcoming AP-meeting.
I have linked this document to the AP-meeting agenda
(https://hess-confluence.desy.de/confluence/display/HESS/Vibe+meeting+2020-1…)
for you to read in preparation for the AP-meeting, and invited Gerd as
representative of the OC to join our meeting.
The most time-consuming item on our next meeting will be to discuss the
AP-department's contribution to the upcoming HESS collaboration meeting.
To streamline our discussions here, let me list a few points that we
shall discuss on Friday:
(1) General mode of presentations
(2) AP sessions arranged topic-wise (as last time), or AWG-wise?
(3) Time slots
(4) Proposal 2021 discussions
(5) HESS-XX discussions
(6) Reports (AWG?, MWLB)
I also prepared a confluence page where we shall collect
requests/proposals for presentations:
https://hess-confluence.desy.de/confluence/display/HESS/Preparation+of+Astr…
Connection details (let's try zoom this time for this meeting) will follow.
Talk to you soon!
All the best,
Anita
Dear WG and department leads,
we are planning the transition of all the video conferences within H.E.S.S.
from Vibe/eZuce to Zoom in the coming months (deadline is the end of the
year from when the Vibe contract will be discontinued). We would therefore
encourage you to start scheduling your HESS-related meetings already now
using Zoom.
For those who do not have a Zoom license available from their host
institute/university, we will provide access to a common license for
WG/Department leads which allows up to 300 participants. In this case,
please contact me and Stefan Ohm to obtain access information.
Thanks,
Heike and Stefan

Dear all,
following up on the summary of 2019 data that I showed in the meeting this
morning:
Attached please find a slightly enhanced version of the observing summary
of 2019.
Color code:
Yellow backdrop = ToO sources
All of the 2019 data are in Europe and calibrated
This is not quite at the stage yet that was intended, but gives you an idea
for the 2019 data. 2017 and 2018 will follow.
2020:
All data taken until P8 will be in Europe and calibrated by the next
collaboration meeting.
This includes (most) of the data taken on
Eta Car, Cen A, IGS, HESSJ1832-093, J2019+368, Kepler SNR, SS 433, PSR
1413-6025 plus ToOs plus proposals that were started but not yet completed
Best regards,
Stefan
