Dear all,
following up on our telecon last month I iterated an executive statement
on the proposal for a further extension of HESS.
Please take a look and comment. Any further ideas, concerns, improvements?
While the draft will be operated until submission, I'd appreciate feedback
by Feb 23 next week.
Best regards,
Stefan
Dear conveners,
as mentioned in ap-, it- and ops- calls, we plan to prepare the case for a
further extension of HESS into 2025. This case is not meant to be an
enormous amount of work to generate a heavy document. It is rather an
opportunity for all members of the collaboration to propose changes to our
strategy for running HESS, such as, e.g., new science approaches, new
procedures and ways of calibrating data to get better results. We aim for
making improvements based on our experience and shape the observing
program such that we will cover the most attractive science questions.
I would like to encourage you once more to entertain discussions in
forthcoming meetings of your working groups.
We would like to arrange a <1h meeting among all conveners in the next week
to discuss any suggestions that you might want to put forward and how to
best collect further input.
As a second topic we want to discuss the options for a collaboration
meeting in the next few months.
Please indicate your availability on this poll:
https://terminplaner4.dfn.de/f4B26Z9tXJW7hkW5
In a separate mail I request input from the HESS group leaders concerning a
collaboration meeting in the next few months.
Best regards,
Stefan,

Dear all,
the CB is still ongoing, but the proposal to run with a legacy program has
been accepted.
I will rephrase some pre-prepared introductory slides and upload theme
tonight. In case you wish to show slides, feel free to link them as well.
Best regards,
Stefan

Dear all,
this is a brief preview for tomorrow afternoon.
The suggestion to implement a multi-year legacy program will be discussed
in the CB this afternoon.
In case the legacy program will be accepted, we should move towards the
specific proposal rather soon.
In case it would not get accepted, our discussion on legacy ideas would be
a guideline for the preparations of proposals in the traditional manner,
but we might bring the new call for proposals forward by a few months
(about the time of the next meeting).
In either case, you are asked to give a statement in the session tomorrow
afternoon about which OBSERVATIONS you consider to be of interest for a
legacy proposal (this is not about science projects with archival or 2020
data).
Please stay within 9 minutes to allow for general questions.
We suggest to set up 3 breakout rooms at 15:30 to extend the discussions
in three main areas:
Galactic sources
Extragalactic Sources and Transients
Diffuse Emission and Survey Observations
Best regards,
Stefan
PS: I will obviously let you know about the CB decision asap.

Dear All,
a draft for the AP-program for the upcoming HESS collaboration
meeting is available at:
https://hess-confluence.desy.de/confluence/display/HESS/Astrophysics+Sessio…
Please, check out whether you're happy with it (scheduling, etc) & let
me know by Monday 4pm if you see any problems. Please also feel free to
adjust the talk/discussion duration of the talks of your WG (I may have
over/under-estimated some) as long as all remains within the respective
session time.
Also please don't forget to ask for break-out rooms (see table on
https://hess-confluence.desy.de/confluence/display/HESS/2021+April+virtual+…
) for your HESS Science discussion rounds. A good way to focus these
discussions would be to come up in the end with an ordered priority list
of the science your WG is envisioning to pursue with HESS over the next
years (i.e., if extension is granted). The results of these discussions
is foreseen to be presented by each convener in the Thursday (29 April)
afternoon session.
All the best,
Anita
Dear all,
in order to clarify the status of the 'legacy program' I would like to sum
up the status reported on in our last AP meeting.
- setting up a legacy program has not yet been decided or approved.
- the suggestion to start a legacy program will be proposed to the CB.
- The CB will take a decision.
- The proposal has been announced to the SC for information.
- in case we move ahead with this proposal, we should define the legacy
program early and hence want to use this meeting for discussion.
- in case the CB would prefer to continue with the current procedure, the
consideration towards a legacy proposal will still help to define our
priorities.
- The CB will meet on the day before our discussion session and we shall
hence know its opinion when we start the session on the HESS legacy.
- I attach the draft of the proposal to the CB for your information.
An updated version of this will be shown as introduction to the discussion
session on 'HESS Legacy' (reflecting the opinions of the CB).
Best regards,
Stefan
Dear All,
thanks for voting. It looks like there is a tendency to have our
*next AP-call on 9th April *(instead Good Friday).
One of us has a problem with the time slot. Therefore I'd like to ask
everybody whether it is possible for you to shift the 9th April meeting
by 30min, so starting at 11:30am?
Spring Collaboration Meeting (CM):
I would further like to remind you about the deadline for talk requests
for our upcoming CM,
https://hess-confluence.desy.de/confluence/display/HESS/Astrophysics+Sessio…
the /*deadline (8 April)* /being *before* the next AP-call.
This means in particular, that by our next AP-call you/it should be
clear which topics (& to which extend) from your WG are going to be
presented at the CM.
To facilitate the planning of the CM's AP-program it would be good to
get feedback from you already by the end of this week (2nd April) on:
_/1) AP-program block within the CM/_ preferably
- rather beginning of CM (sessions somewhere 19.-23.4.)?
- rather end of CM (sessions somewhere 26.-30.4. excluding 27.4.)?
Pls vote.
_/2) Session times:/_
10:30-12:00 and 14:00-15:30 ok?
Any needs to change here?
_/3) Requested hours:/_
Roughly,
- how many ordinary talk requests (same modus as at the autumn CM)
are you expecting from your WG?
- How many WT-requests?
(This is only to get an idea whether the time distribution among the
departments need to be changed significantly, or can roughly stay as
were in the past.)
ICRC contributions and WTs/status updates at CM: There will be a
separate email / forward from Stefan on this subject (separate email).
All the best,
and stay healthy!
Anita
