Dear all,
I have been scratching my head for a while, too, on the subject, and it
turns out that I am similarly sceptical as Manami is. A PWN halo (like
Geminga) probably is not detectable in X-rays. For the l=340 Norma arm
field, I'm also wondering what the science case would be; in addition,
there are bright X-ray point sources (XRBs) along the plane which may
prevent good XMM results due to straylight impact.
As much as I like the unidentified sources, also here I have
difficulties in seeing an attractive science case for a larger sample of
sources. I don't see that we could test relic PWN vs old SNR with these
observations, even on statistical level. Finding the accelerators would
be a valid goal, but the expected success rate could be questioned and
it may therefore be hard to justify such a big XMM program.

The multi-year heritage programmes should address a science question which cannot be
answered with many single observations but requires the entire set of observations which
will amount to a very long observing time (e.g. for a study of the evolution of accreting
compact objects, you need to observe a large set of these sources). I am not sure if a
deep observation of the Norma arm or the follow-up of unidentified sources will make a
good enough science case. The Geminga halo is interesting, but I wonder if we can expect
to detect any related X-ray emission.
