Dear All,
the organizers of the CRIS2020 conference are looking for a HESS
speaker who could provide an overview talk of recent HESS results at the
CRIS conference in Vietri Sul Mare (Italy) in the week 8-12 June. Looks
like a nice place for a conference. Is anyone willing to take up this
invitation?
All the best,
Anita

Oggetto: Re: HESS Collaboration - Invitation to CRIS2020
Dear Antonio Insolia, dear Fausto Guarino,
thank you very much for the kind invitation to deliver a overview
talk on recent HESS results! Unfortunately, I myself am not available
for the week Jun 8 - 12, 2020, but, with your permission, would be
willing to search within the HESS collaboration for a suitable speaker
who would be available for this time slot of CRIS2020. Would this be
fine with you?
Kind regards,
Anita Reimer

Dear all,
I cc Gerd (who will be interim chair of the new OC until the OC will elect
a chair in Obergurgl) for information.
last fall I participated again in the xmm review. In the meeting of panel
chairs we recommended the Multi-Year Heritage Programme of XMM for
continuation.
Based on the discussions among the XMM panel chairs, I thought that we may
consider this in HESS as well.
The XMM plan for Multi-Year Heritage Programms has now been approved and
has been announced (see below).
I wonder whether we should consider a proposal to study, e.g., the X-ray
properties of the Galactic TeV sources. This would combine the efforts of
the entire Galactic science in HESS. We should be clear that a proposal
would be a significant amount of work (last round's proposals were VERY
GOOD) but I think we would now have a good chance (with the published
HGPS out, etc.)
An obvious option would be to propose this effectively by HESS (Co-Is
would have to be individual HESS members). Please feel free to consider,
to comment, to discuss in your groups. I suggest we discuss this briefly
on Feb 25/26. In case we wanted to go this way, we ought to prepare the
LOI
mentioned in the announcement at that mtg.
Best regards,
Stefan

Letter of Intent for Multi-Year Heritage Programmes
In the next call for XMM-Newton proposals (20th Announcement of
Opportunity) a "Multi-Year Heritage Programme" will be offered for
the second time.
This programme seeks scientific visionary projects which require at
least 2 Ms of observing time. A total of 6 Ms of observing time,
spread over three years, is planned to be made available for this
programme.
In order to organise the evaluation of "Multi-Year Heritage
Programme" proposals, interested scientists are strongly urged to
send an e-mail as letter of intent to the XMM-Newton Project
Scientist (Norbert.Schartel + esa.int ) before 6 March 2020.
The e-mail should contain a draft title, a short (up to three
sentences) description of the respective scientific area and an
estimate of the required observing time.
Anticipated timeline for next XMM-Newton Announcement of
Opportunity: AO-20
The planned key milestones for the Twentieth XMM-Newton
"Announcement of Opportunity" have been established. Within this
AO-20 a new call to submit proposals for observations to be
performed with the XMM-Newton observatory will be issued.
To be prepared for this, please find below the anticipated timeline:
Announcement of Opportunity
18 August 2020
Due date for Proposals 9
October 2020 (12:00 UT)
Final OTAC approved programme
mid December 2020
For approved
proposals only:
Start of Phase II
proposal submission 11
January 2021
Closure of Phase II proposal submission
5 February 2021
Start of observations
May 2021
The official "Announcement of Opportunity" will be made public in
the XMM-Newton News and on the XMM-Newton Science Operations
Centre Home Page.
Let us know about XMM-Newton related Ph.D.
As already announced in previous issues of this Newsletter, the
XMM-Newton team is collecting information about the completion of
doctorates and Ph.D. theses based on (or making use of) XMM-Newton
observations.
We would appreciate if you - being a candidate or a supervisor of a
doctorate - could let us know details through the page
http://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/xmm-newton/phd-theses
Also, we would be grateful if you could inform us (via a message to
xmmhelp(a)sciops.esa.int, with subject "Ph.D. thesis work") in case
you are aware of theses from, or supervised by, colleagues that
make use of XMM-Newton data but are not yet included in the above
list.

Dear All,
this is to provide you with some bits and pieces of news on various
points:
- The *minutes* from our previous vibe-meeting are now online:
https://hess-confluence.desy.de/confluence/display/HESS/Meetings+of+the+Ast…
Please let me know if there is anything important missing.
- As discussed during the last vibe-meeting we're aiming for
a*F2F-meeting *of all HESS-ap conveners to take place back-to-back to
the (yearly) OC-meeting at Landessternwarte Heidelberg. The dates for
this meeting are not yet fixed, the aim is around mid to end February
2020. I'll keep you posted on the dates, etc.
- *Confluence pages:* Heike kindly put together some instructions of how
to deal with incorporating the old confluence pages into the new
structure. Whether confluence pages are moved or copied can be decided
on a case by case basis, and should be decided by the corresponding WG
conveners and/or task leads. Heike advises to move (rather than to copy)
the old confluence page. The How-To-Do instructions including some more
details from Heike are attached to this email. When moving confluence
pages, may I ask you to consider to
* check all confluence pages concerning updates, outdated or redundant
content, etc. and modify accordingly
* follow the "Confluence Rules"
https://hess-confluence.desy.de/confluence/display/HESS/Confluence+Introduc…
* use a sensible confluence page naming scheme
If you encounter any problems, please contact Heike (
heike.prokoph(at)desy.de ) for support.
- *MWL board*: We need to move forward with setting up the MWL board.
As discussed earlier all the seven AWG conveners, Stefan W. and myself
shall be members of the MWL board. This board shall be enlarged by
further HESS-members as needed (to be discussed at the constituting or
later MWL board meetings). We plan the formal constitution of the MWL
board to take place early next year (possibly as part of a HESS-ap
meeting). I will set up a corresponding confluence page for the MWL
board, that then further needs to be maintained by the chair (to be
discussed) of the MWL board.
- Given that the planned F2F-meeting unlikely takes place before
February I'd like to call for the *next HESS-ap vibe-meeting* sometime
mid to end of January 2020. Please indicate your availability for this
vibe-meeting at the following poll:
https://framadate.uibk.ac.at/studs.php?sondage=6mamjmj5s9uvpj1x
by 10 Jan at the latest.
Finally, let me take the opportunity to thank you all for your
supporting and committing help in the restructuring phase of HESS. Quite
some work is still ahead of us, but I am confident that a "steady-state
phase" is in reach, hopefully in the early parts of next year.
Wish you all pleasant winter Holidays, and a prosperous New Year 2020!
All the best,
Anita
Dear Colleagues,
please find the minutes of our last vibe-meeting on
https://hess-confluence.desy.de/confluence/display/HESS/Meetings+of+the+Ast…
shortly.
While the working groups meanwhile seem to be in the course of setting
up and gaining momentum, there are still a few points that need to be
discussed in connection to the works in the AWGs. These are:
- dissemination of science results (publication procedure, conference
contributions, etc)
- possible F2F-meeting before the next collab. meeting
- general structure of astrophysics agenda at collaboration meetings
Therefore I would like to invite you for a vibe-meeting next week. The
agenda items for this vibe-meeting are also placed at:
https://hess-confluence.desy.de/confluence/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=616…
Please complement these points with any items you feel need to be
discussed also at this next meeting.
For this upcoming vibe-meeting please indicate your availability at:
https://framadate.uibk.ac.at/studs.php?sondage=bhvqj23mu8r21w5p
by 19 Nov at the latest.
All the best,
Anita
