Dear All,
thank you very much for your contributions to the tele collaboration
meeting sessions so far, I am very much looking forward to today's
meeting as well!
As you may recall we agreed at our 24 March meeting that each convener
provides a *very brief* report about the aims of the respective AWG for
the next months and current standing, urgent issues etc to the entire
collaboration prior to the online AP Program taking place.
Unfortunately, this seems to have materialized for only less than 1/3 of
all AWGs (or maybe the remaining reports have been uploaded to a
confluence page different to
https://hess-confluence.desy.de/confluence/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=116…
?if yes, pls let me know!). Since we also had agreed that after this
meeting, the respective AWG lead adds, to the same report, a brief
summary on the discussion of those projects, that were presented at the
tele collab. meeting, I suggest that we simply make the complete reports
ready by, say end of next week (17 April). Would this be ok by everybody?
Please respond by midday today if you object.
I would like to advertise these reports at the end of today's session of
our tele AP Program.
Talk to you soon!
All the best,
Anita
Dear all,
Let me express my surprise after todays session of “walk-through talks”. As we discussed in detail during our last call and as Anita reminded everybody at the beginning of the session, this presentation format and this session was meant for analyses in an advanced stage, for which the A&R review has been concluded, for which the main results are ready and for which a publication is expected shortly.
I was quite puzzled to see that roughly half of the presented talks did not match these criteria (for me the Vela, N132D and HEGS talks were the only ones somewhat justified). I think we need to understand what went wrong here. Was this due to a misunderstanding? Misunderstanding about the aim of WT talks or the status of the presented analyses? At the side of the conveners who proposed the talks? Or a miscommunication from the task leaders towards the conveners about the task status? Something else?
In any case, I believe we should strive to avoid this confusion in the future. It is extremely frustrating for tasks that were denied a WT talk this time because they did not fully comply with the mentioned requirements to see others, at a less advanced stage, being presented. I also believe we will have to redo proper WT talk once the analyses will have reached that stage. Let me be clear: I am not saying that the talks today were a waste of time! An update on the presented tasks was certainly helpful and necessary. They were just not at the stage required within the publication scheme for the collaboration walk-through.
Cheers,
Fabian

Dear All,
thanks very much for contributing to our telecon AP Program. It is
now finalized and online at:
https://hess-confluence.desy.de/confluence/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=116…
Also uploaded (on that same page at "Session 2")) are the working group
reports (as we have discussed) that I received so far. For all others
please don't forget to either upload them to that confluence page, or
alternatively send them to me before Monday evening (as the idea was to
make them available to the collaboration before the AP sessions).
All the best,
and take care!
Anita
Dear All,
I produced a very preliminary agenda for our 3 sessions of the telecon
Collaboration Meeting AP Program:
https://hess-confluence.desy.de/confluence/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=116…
The talk durations do not include the discussion time.
The program is not final yet, as you can see from the questionmarks, but
hopefully can be finalized in the next few days. Meanwhile please check
that all requested talks are included correctly. Please also let me know
whether the individual talk durations are currently over- or
underestimated, so that I can adjust them accordingly.
All the best,
and take care!
Anita
Dear All,
you will have received the message from Stefan Wagner that,
unfortunately, the HESS collaboration meeting in Obergurgl has to be
cancelled. Still, critical status updates are planned to be transported
to the whole collaboration, also supported via a dedicated vibe meeting.
Further forms of exchanging information are possible. E.g., each
department may organize also a department-wide vibe meeting with talks,
reports, etc that would be beneficial to communicate to beyond the WG.
For the Astrophysics Department it is upon us:
- if
- what
- in which form and format
- when
Please comment by tomorrow (Thursday) late afternoon (~5pm). We may also
have a quick vibe meeting on this (Friday?) if you think it is helpful.
I am truly sorry for this turn. A lot of work and time has flown already
into the preparations of an attractive AP Program for a
F2F(!)-collaboration meeting. Vibe meetings can not substitute the
important discussions that are typically triggered in F2F-meetings.
Still, to demonstrate an active astrophysics program within HESS,
motivation for most to dedicate a lot of time and engagement to the HESS
experiment, is important.
All the best,
Anita
Dear All,
you may recall that at the F2F-meeting last week we discussed that
*session 1* of the AP program at the collaboration meeting shall provide
an overview of what we think is do-able & important for HESS to push.
Emma's sketch (below) nicely captures this idea I think. Each AWG has
science priorities that are planned for the next upcoming years of HESS
operations, which should be transported in this talk in a convincing way
using sensible arguments. In order to not having a several hours long
talk I suggest that each group restricts itself to the highest
priority/hottest topic the respective group is aiming for. My rough
outline/sketch of such talk is attached. I would estimate ~3 (-4??)
slides per [AWG] that touch upon the questions indicated in the outline.
As said at the F2F I am available to present this talk (provided help by
you wrt slides etc) if you all wish so.
Please feel free to comment (incl. outline) by next Monday at the
latest, please.
It would be good to receive all slides by ~Thursday next week at the
very latest, so that any further changes can be done without too much
pressure.
Concerning the *preparations for the AP program* at the collaboration
meeting I got the impression that more communication and information
exchange is needed. I therefore would like to offer to have a quick vibe
meeting tomorrow (Friday 5 March) afternoon, or Monday at the latest,
where we should clarify upon the structure we want for this AP program
and answer all open questions. (The current build-up of this meeting at
https://hess-confluence.desy.de/confluence/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=103…
looks partly at bit confusing to me at the moment wrt what we agreed
upon at the F2F.) If you're interested in such quick (<30min)
vibe-meeting please indicate your availability at:
https://framadate.uibk.ac.at/studs.php?sondage=zu3y7s8gtqqh68gp
by tomorrow lunch time at the latest.
All the best,
Anita

Dear *s,
as I announced yesterday during our call, we need to prepare a couple of slides in which we explain our view on the priorities of the stellar physics WG for the upcoming years. I prepared the attached ones, based on our activities, and also some projects which have been initiated in the last months. Anita asked to send them by Monday, so please send me comments before Monday evening (sorry for the short time and over the weekend).
We also need to think about the Special sessions in Obergurgl. During the call yesterday I suggested a couple of topics that might be good to discuss, if enough people are available and willing to meet:
https://hess-confluence.desy.de/confluence/display/HESS/March+2020+Call+of+… <https://hess-confluence.desy.de/confluence/display/HESS/March+2020+Call+of+…>

•Unidentified PeVatrons
•Binaries above 10 TeV –Project kick-off meeting
•Compact binary systems –Including LMXB, Globular Clusters, Mspulsars
•HESS J0632+057 –X-checks and analysis
•PSR: Vela (most probably difficult since relevant WG people won’t be attending)
•Any other ideas?
Please comment on the above and/or suggest any other topic that you think it is important to discuss.
Have a good weekend
Emma
Dear All,
any aspect you think would be good (in view of our collaboration
meeting's AP program) to have added here (see below the message from the
IT/Computing department)?
Best,

Dear colleagues,
For the upcoming collaboration meeting, I discussed with S. Wagner and
we would propose as a starting point the following program
that could fit in ~ 3 hours. Let me know your comments / suggestions /
proposition for eventual other talks asap, as well as possible names.
Thanks in advance,

Dear AP conveners,
following the proposal evaluation by the OC during the OC meeting last
week in Heidelberg, preparation of the LTS is ongoing. Only then final
results (i.e. if a program will be scheduled and with what priority)
will be known. At the same time, we are preparing responses to the
respective proposal PIs.
It was mentioned on several occasions, but may not have reached all of
you: AP conveners had been invited to the OC evaluation for very good
reasons, but the OC meeting as such is considered confidential. Feedback
to the proposers should only come through the feedback by the OC. This
is to avoid the danger of non-coherent feedback, and also to avoid
serving proposers on different timescales.
Best, Gerd
